Early but it's dead here,
As always, I put games in--
probable win: Missouri, YSU, Kansas, ISU
probable loss: Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, OSU
toss-up BYU, KSU, TTU, Baylor ( a late addition to toss-up)
The Big 12 is not looking very strong this year and if there ever was a year for Dead Man Walking win to win 9 in the regular season, this would be it.
I think BYU and KSU could be the keys. Win both of those, start 4-0, and we might sweep the tossups and/or pull an upset and do better than expected. Baylor as the last game and at home should be in play regardless because it will probably be going through the motions by that point. In a lot of ways everything looks good for a breakout season, except 2 things.
The team and the coach.
(H)Missouri W (H)Youngstown St W (N) BYU* L (H)Kansas State W (A)Texas Tech L (H)TCU L (A)Oklahoma State L (H)Kansas W (A)Texas L (H)Oklahoma L (A)Iowa State W (H)Baylor W
6-6 (4-5) **************
Big 12
Oklahoma 9-0 (not even that much of a feat this year) Texas 6-3 TCU 6-3 OSU 6-3 Baylor 5-4 (still has talent and winning 5 this year not tough) TTU 4-5 WVU 4-5 KSU 4-5 ISU 1-8 Kansas 0-9
Really, from 2 through 8 not much would be a surprise.

Dream and Nightmare Scenarios for WVU...
It’s that time again for your favorite annual series, where we come up with dream and nightmare scenarios for every Big 12 team for the upcoming season. Reality will fall somewhere in the middle. But imagine a season in which every single possible domino fell into place. And likewise, if all that could go wrong, well, did.
We start up this series with West Virginia:
Dream scenario:
Skyler Howard proves to be the same QB that shredded Arizona State in the bowl game. He cuts down his turnovers in half while improving his completion percentage to one of the best three in the conference. Shelton Gibby proves to be the second coming of Kevin White, only more athletic. Kennedy McKoy quickly establishes himself as the Big 12’s top freshman running back, behind the best run-blocking line offensive line that Dana Holgorsen has ever enjoyed in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers jump to another fantastic start, pummeling Missouri in Morgantown by three touchdowns. West Virginia follows that with a victory in Landover, Maryland, as Howard outduels Taysom Hill with 400 yards through the air. The following week, Holgorsen Finau-ly figures out the antidote to “The Wizard, as West Virginia handles K-State to move to 4-0.
Defensively, West Virginia coordinator Tony Gibby pushes all the right buttons as he retools his inexperienced defense around game-breaking safety Dravon Henry-Askew and end Noble Nwachukwu, who both earn first-team All-Big 12 honors.
Even in a dream scenario, the Mountaineers don't go undefeated, losing three close ones in a row to Texas Tech, TCU and Oklahoma State. But the mental wounds of last year's four-game losing streak are quickly healed.
Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year Kyzir White picks off Shane Buechele late in Austin to seal the victory over Texas. Then, before a primetime ESPN College GameDay audience in Morgantown, West Virginia stuns top-ranked Oklahoma, as Howard engineers a game-winning touchdown drive in the final seconds. Country music star Brad Paisley is in the house for the win, and after the student body storms the field, he leads ‘Eer Nation to a boisterous rendition of “Country Roads” over the PA system.
The Mountaineers go on to finish with nine wins for the first time as a Big 12 member, before rolling past Rich Rodriguez and Arizona in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
Holgorsen Finau-ly inks a contract extension. Bob Huggins goes to the Sweet 16. Pitt finishes 4-8. West Virginia signs five blue-chippers out of Miami. The Big 12 invites Cincinnati to join the league, giving the Mountaineers their sought-after travel partner.
Nightmare scenario:
It doesn't take long for the turnovers that plagued Howard in 2015 to resurface. He’s picked off four times by a surprisingly stingy Mizzou defense, and West Virginia drops the opener, 9-3.
Gibby struggles with drops all year, and the running game falls apart without Wendell Smallwood. Defensively, the Mountaineers are unable to discover any consistency with so many new faces.
After failing to score a touchdown again against BYU, Holgorsen turns the offense over to freshman QB Chris Chugunov. He fives the offense a jolt against K-State, but the Wildcats take down West Virginia yet again in the fourth quarter with a punt return touchdown.
The Mountaineers rebound to get to five wins, but can't get to bowl eligibility, as Jim Grobe and Baylor run West Virginia out of a half-full EpiPen Stadium.
Pitts goes on to win the ACC Coastal. Holgorsen bolts to become Tom Herman's replacement at new Big 12 member Houston. The conference also adds BYU, Boise State and Colorado State, thrusting West Virginia's travel budget into turmoil.

It's good to see the excitement here for the rapidly approaching season is at a fever pitch.
On the other hand, I see it as a sign we are mostly mentally healthy that there is no action in the politics thread either. My politically engaged friends worry me because I don't how anyone reasonably sane can view the election with anything but dread.

Hey, who isn't psyched for football??!?!? That 6-6 record isn't going to earn itself.
I think at this point we're just looking for truly farcical stories (the bar gets raised higher every day). We're all generally set on our candidates, and there really isn't much to debate over the two morons on top.

Well, it appears that everyone is eagerly awaiting my annual Pigskin Prognostication Special Event, so without further ado, here is my fearless and always incredibly accurate picks!
Sat., Sep. 03 Missouri: Missouri is a team in transition. They usually have a very dynamic offense but they regressed greatly last year. Their QB is a true sophomore and had a lot of growing pains last year. He can run but he's easily rattled. I believe our defense will rattle him in the season opener. Missouri had the #5 defense in the $EC last year. They have two dynamic pass rushers and a stellar pass defense. However, I believe that our offense is up to the task and the run game will neutralize that pass rush. WVU: 35 Mizzou: 17
Sat., Sep. 10 Youngstown State: I always wondered what happened to Bo Pellini. Well, here he is and he's coming to Mountaineer Field as the HC of the Penguins! This team went into Heinz Field last year and gave a scare to sPitt. They have a nasty defense and a very mediocre offense. Once again, our running attack of Rushel Shell and the talented freshman Kennedy McCoy will wear down the Penguins and our defense will stop the one-dimensional Penguin running attack. WVU: 45 YSU: 13 Sat., Sep. 24 vs. BYU (Landover, Md.): This will be a test for our defense. BYU is known for it's high-flying offense and they get their QB back this year from injury. Taysom Hill is a threat everytime he touches the ball, and the "backup" Tanner Mangum is a gunslinger. BYU lost a lot of talent off last year's team, so they will probably lean on the run a lot early. If WVU stops the run, and our offense can control the game and time of possession, we will be singing Country Roads in DC! I think we will... WVU: 45 BYU: 38 Sat., Oct. 01 Kansas State: If you remember anything about my writings about KSU, you know I have a huge amount of respect for Bill Snyder. His teams are always well coached, they don't beat themselves, and they know how to win. The man is a class-act. This year he returns the best defense he's had in a long time, especially against the run. This will be a game where Sklyer Howard and the WVU receiving corps must step up their game. We will run the ball, as that is our strength this year, but the game will be won if Skyler doesn't throw the ball to the guys in the white and purple jerseys. Expect some good football to be played and for the Old Gold & Blue to prevail Finau-ly against Coach Snyder! WVU: 38 KSU: 24 Sat., Oct. 15 at Texas Tech: I've not embraced the Big XII as far as rivalries go. We really don't have a natural rival yet, but one of the two teams I abhor is Texas Tech. I think Kliff Kingsbury is vastly overrated and I would love nothing more than to head to Lubbock and kick their arses! But we have our hands full with these guys. They have Patrick Mahomes who many think is the best QB in the Big XII and he can sling that pill around the yard. But they also have a pitiful defense that couldn't stop me and Hoss from gaining 200 yards on the ground against them. If you like high flying offense and high scoring games, this one will be for you! Whoever has the ball last probably will be the winner. WVU: 52 TTU: 49 Sat., Oct. 22 TCU: TCU came into the league at the same time WVU did and has fared MUCH better than we have. We can debate the "why's" of this later, but keep in mind they recruit Texas very well and there's much more talent there than in WV. They lost a ton on offense and will be in a QB battle all fall. They lost their leading receiver and RB and they don't have much depth there either. They will always have a great defense, as that is Gary Patterson's hallmark, but they are susceptible to the run. Look for another great day by our RB's and a few bombs to keep them honest headed to our fleet of receivers. The biggest question I have is this: Will we score more points than the number of times Gary Patterson hitches his britches up? That remains to be seen... WVU: 35 TCU: 34 Sat., Oct. 29 at Oklahoma State: Okie State wandered into Mountaineer Field last season and put up one of their best games of the year against us. Their defense stopped our offense and their combination of a good passing attack and a good running QB beat us. I thought this was a game we should've won and we let get away. This year we go to Stillwater and the running QB is gone, but they have a running back with a familiar name: Barry Sanders, Jr. But he ain't his daddy and I think we handle him. This will be the biggest test since Texas Tech of our secondary and I'd like to think we leared a thing or two in Lubbock. The Okie State defense lost a lot of talent and with our ability to provide balance I think we will control the time of possession and control the game. Still a high scoring affair (like most Big XII games) but... WVU: 38 OSU: 35 Sat., Nov. 05 Kansas: Not much to write here. Kansas is not there yet. Maybe David Beatty will be able to recruit some talent for football in Lawrence, but he's not there yet. They probably have found their QB in Ryan Willis, but not much to go with him. The defense will be better, but if the offense struggles and they have to play too much defense, they will wilt in most games. Look for WVU to score early and often again... WVU: 52 KU: Looking for 11/11/16 and the start of basketball season. Sat., Nov. 12 at Texas: This is perhaps the toughest game for me to predict. Texas will most likely be playing a Freshman QB by the time we head to Austin and he will have already run a pretty formidable schedule by then as well. They have two stud running backs who will take the pressure off of him and a defense which will be stout. Most of all, Charlie Strong is coaching for his life this season. If Texas has underachieved before now, it might be an interim coach we are facing. If they are as good as the pundits say, it will be a tough battle of ground games in this one I look for the latter and a hard fought game, going to... WVU: 31 Texas: 28 Sat., Nov. 19 Oklahoma: Whoa Nelly! Here come the #1 Oklahoma Sooners to EpiPen Stadium in November! Oklahoma is as good as advertised. Baker Mayfield is the leading candidate for the Hypesman Trophy, fiven annually to the most overrated college player who won't do squat in the NFL. They have receivers, OL, Defense, Special Teams, and swagger. They are looking ahead to playing in the Playoff. WVU is a two touchdown dog in this one. Yes, WVU has played well all season, but this is Oklahoma. A night time crowd will be packed into Mountaineer Field, we will break out the white throwback helmets, and as we all know, magic happens at night in Morgantown. Hide the couches! WVU: 31 OU: 24 Sat., Nov. 26 at Iowa State: This game worries me. We go to a frigid Jack Trice Stadium, the wind is howling, snow is blowing, and this team has gotten better as the season has progressed. They have their QB situation settled in Joel Lanning, a good running back in Mike Warren, and a legitimate WR threat in Allen Lazard. Their O-line is porous though, and their defense is adequate to make this game much closer than it should be. I think WVU runs the ball well and we have a break out performace from Kennedy McKoy to Finau-ly make the score... WVU: 31 ISU: 21 Sat., Dec. 03 Baylor: The last game of the year and it's the team that I hate the most in the Big XII...Baylor. I really despised Art Briles and I still despise the team. However, this is a hard game to predict. It is very possible that this team has imploded onto itself a few weeks earlier, suspended a ton of players, is under NCAA investigation and is just a shell of it's former self. But that also can make it dangerous if by now they aren't playing for anything other than pride. My belief is this...It will be cold, they will be down, we will be able to control the ball, and we hang quite a few points on them. WVU: 45 BU: 35
This year's playoff schedule works well for our beloved WVU Mountaineers. We will play on New Year's Eve in Atlanta, GA at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against the Alabama Crimson Tide. You thought we were dogs against Oklahoma? This will be considered the "Lock of the Century". But I'm old enough to remember the last time we played an SEC School, in Atlanta, and were such a dog. Remember playing Georgia in the Sugar Bowl? That worked out well. But even before that, we played in a rainy Peach Bowl in 1981 against a Florida team that was supposed to dominate us. WVU prevailed 26-6, prompting Florida coach Charlie Pell to burn the game film and bury it in the Gators' practice field. This time, it's a hard fought game, but a late Skylar Howard to a streaking Gary Jennings late in the game seals the deal... WVU: 28 Alabama: 24
Which set us up for the National Championship Game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Remember the words of Rich Rod when he said "If we can get there on a tank of gas and a cooler of beer, our fans will be there!" Well, we came out in droves in Atlanta, burned it to the ground, and now we made the trip to Tampa. There, we find the Ohio State Buckeyes who in the other NSF game beat the Clemson Tigers on a late field goal 38-35. This will also be a hard fought ground game. Both teams playing well on both sides of the ball. But in the end, Rushel Shell has his finest game as a Mountaineer and his size and speed wear down the Buckeye defense. WVU: 27 tOSU: 21
And there you go, my path to the National Championship for the West Virginia Mountaineers!
I welcome your comments and Let's Go Mountaineers! Seeya at the Canadian Flag and at Hoss's Tailgate!

2016 season preview: West Virginia Mountaineers (per ESPN.com)
In its sixth year under Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia appears to have arrived at a crossroads. The Mountaineers continue to seek a Big 12 breakthrough, having won no more than eight games in any of the four years after joining the league on the heels of seven consecutive seasons with at least nine wins.
Is this the year? With a senior quarterback, perhaps the Big 12’s best offensive line, a solid defensive system and a tough -- but manageable -- schedule, opportunity awaits.
Our preseason look at West Virginia:
Key losses: RB Wendell Smallwood, WR Jordan Thompson, OT Marquis Lucas, NT Kyle Rose, LB Nick Kwiatkoski, LB Shaq Petteway, LB Jared Barber, S KJ Dillon, S Karl Joseph, CB Terrell Chestnut, CB Daryl Worley
Key returners: QB Skyler Howard, RB Rushel Shell, WR Shelton Gibby, WR Daikiel Shorts, OG Kyle Bosch, OG Adam Pankey, C Tyler Orlosky, DE Noble Nwachukwu, DE Christian Brown, S JaNAME REDACTED Harper, S Jeremy Tyler
Preseason storyline: Can the defense reload? Departures hit the Mountaineers hard even before junior safety Dravon Askew-Henry was lost for the season with a knee injury this month. Nwachukwu, a preseason All-Big 12 pick, notched 8.5 sacks a year ago, but WVU must replace the majority of its front six -- including a strong trio of linebackers that played a huge role as the Mountaineers surrendered just 24.6 points per game a year ago, second in the league to Oklahoma.
Coordinator Tony Gibby runs a sound 3-3-5 system suited well to slow the high-octane offenses in the Big 12. His unit ranked second nationally in interceptions, fifth in forced turnovers and eighth in opponent three-and-out series last year.
Worley and Chestnut formed an impressive duo last year. With the likes of Baker Mayfield, Seth Russell and Patrick Mahomes set to take aim at the WVU secondary, quick progress at corner is a huge priority. The group includes seniors Nana Kyeremeh and Rasul Douglas in addition to transfers Antonio Crawford and Maurice Fleming.
Most interesting position: It might be the aforementioned cornerback scramble, but we can’t ignore the offense, where West Virginia is loaded with talent and experience.
Try to find a weak spot. It’s not there.
Let’s focus on the most impressive area, which is the interior of the offensive line, manned by Bosch, a preseason All-Big 12 pick. Pankey, who is suspended through at least the opener next week at Missouri, and Orlosky both received all-league consideration for our team.
At full strength, they are equipped to open holes for Shell, the former Pitt back, and provide time for Howard to pick holes in leaky Big 12 secondaries.
Game that matters most: No game jumps off the schedule. After all, they all count the same. The nonconference slate is a challenge, featuring Mizzou before a Week 4 meeting with BYU at the Washington Redskins’ FedEx Field. But the most meaningful games come in Big 12 play. So we’re picking a Week 8 home matchup with TCU.
The Horned Frogs are a darkhorse league-title candidate, and they played three entertaining games with WVU before a 40-10 TCU rout last year in Fort Worth. These went to overtime in 2012 and 2013, with the road team winning each time; the Horned Frogs then won 31-30 at Mountaineer Field in 2014.
Something about the timing of this game, early in the league season, makes it likely to identify the Mountaineers as a contender or pretender in the Big 12.
Prediction: West Virginia is sneaky good. Many preseason picks slot the Mountaineers in the bottom half of the Big 12. (The media slotted them seventh, though ESPN The Magazine placed West Virginia at fourth.)
Keeping with this theme, Howard might rank as the Big 12’s most underrated quarterback. We envision an excellent senior season for him that that features a hot start as the Mountaineers arrive at the aforementioned TCU game with one loss. From there, it’s going to be a wild ride. And West Virginia’s success will depend in large part on the maturity of its defense.
With TCU, Oklahoma and Baylor at home, the Mountaineers will pull at least one upset and get to nine wins for the first time since 2011 to provide some breathing room for Holgorsen.

He spotted you 3 wins, so you need WVU to win at least 11 games. That means you couldn't collect without a bowl win at this point.
