With all the talk on the internets about what happens to Daner if we end up 6-6 or 5-7 this year, as well as the rampant rumors that RichRod is licking his chops to come back to his alma mater, I bring up a question that intrigues me...
"Is WVU Football a DESTINATION job or a STEPPING-STONE job?"
The reason I ask is this: I have been discussing with some of my friends the "merits" of RichRod coming back to WVU. I maintain that even if he came back, he will always have an eye out for that big SEC job that it has always been assumed he's after. So, if that is the case, does that make WVU a DESTINATION JOB or a STEPPING-STONE job? I mean, if an alum still would bolt from here, why would anyone else who experiences success stay here?
Curious to get y'all's take...

All but handful of college jobs could be called stepping-stones, and for those very few destination jobs, there is still the NFL.
It's pretty irrelevant really. You do everything possible to keep a good coach and you still might not succeed, but that's no reason to keep a bad one.

I agree, not a reason to keep a bad coach, but also the delusional people who think we are this "elite" program and every coach in the land is going to thrown their hat in the ring to be WVU's HC are crazy too. If we do get rid of Daner (which I'm still not sure we are), we most likely are going to get some young OC/DC/MAC/C-USA coach who either it's their first Head Coaching job or they are looking to use WVU to get that "dream job" of theirs, either at their own alma mater or one of the "destination jobs". |

I see lots of Internet Speculation from bloggers who worship The Dude. Nothing from major outlets...credible sources...people who draw a regular paycheck writing about sports.
Personally, I don't see it. It's pretty much a lateral move from one mid-tier Power Five conference team to another, and I can't see him moving off a soon-to-be 4 straight winning record seasons for a lateral move. If he did come back, then I could somewhat argue that he might see it as a long term move since the money wouldn't be better and he goes back to really hustling for recruits. That's really wanting to be here if he fives up what seems like a great situation for us. Maybe he divorced Skeletor Bitch and we just haven't heard about it yet.

Are you referring to Rodriguez as the dude or saying there are people who still pay attention to "The Dude" we were making fun of a few years ago. Hard to believe that anyone would except for laughs. I do hear people in general talk about Rodriguez fairly often, but always in terms of they would either love or hate to have him back, never that they think there is anything in the works. The few people I know who are truly connected have not said anything about him. But, it's early. Lose the next 2 and people won't be talking about anything but the next coach. I don't see it happening because there are just too many people who are bitter about his departure and the litigations and all the crap. Even if 2/3 of the people loved him (and I don't think it's near that high) it would be messy as hell where 1/3 hate him and that third includes some with $$$. |

That's one way of looking at it, but I don't think Holgorsen or Stewart incite the passions our buddy Rich does.
With the first two there was and is a lot of disagreement about their ability to coach, but even the people who don't think they could coach their way out of a paper bag don't seem to fantasize about subjecting them to eternal torture.

On another note, have there always been this many mid season replacements at head coach? I don't remember there ever being four open positions at this point in the season. USC, USC East, Miami, & UCF. I think there are a one or two more.

I don't think I like Doc... he looks like a dipshit.
It would be funny to take Marshall's coach.... but when they replaced him there is probably a good chance that they end up with the better coach in the deal.

No doubt Doc has done well at Marshall, but I don't think his skills would translate well to us. He is a very good recruiter and with his long ties down in FLA, he gets a lot of the kids who can't go major conference due to grades whatever but have talent significantly above what most of their opponents have. He loses number of them every year, but he seems able to always restock. He seems to be good at evaluating players too and even when you get past those kind of guys, his teams are just more talented than most CUSA or G0f5 teams generally.
While we need to improve recruiting, no one is going to recruit at WVU to the level where we have better talent than just about everyone we play. Doc would likely do a better job at recruiting even though we can't sign a lot of the players he can at MU. I just don't think that even with better talent than we have, Doc is a coach who consistently outcoach and beat teams with similar talent or pull that many upsets over more talented teams. We need to do the first to really improve and the second to "compete" for titles.
