Hey man! We just put out our garden this week. We even had a frost Monday night! We now have our potatoes, onions, lettuce, and cabbage in the ground. If the weather cooperates, we will put out our tomato plants, pepper plants, corn, peas, squash and zucchini later this week. So far, so good...
We learned the 'secret' to good tomato plants a couple of years back from my next door neighbor, a man who is 92 years young and still gardens every day! He gave us his recipe for strong and productive tomato plants: In the hole, place two tablespoons of epsom salts and one tablespoon of portland cement. Place the tomato plants directly on top of the mixture, cover with soil and water profusely. Last year, we had over 300 tomatoes from 10 plants! The stalk was about 3 inches in diameter, and they were so heavy, they pulled over our stakes, and we use 10' roof bolts!

I've heard of using salts in various forms but whats the deal with the portland? The lime? Must be. Mr. Garrett (the 92-year-old-man) also advocates using a solution of Ammonium Nitrate infused with Nitrogen weekly. He will plant 25-30 tomato plants, and yield about 1,000 to 1,500 large, red, meaty tomatoes, which he cans, eats, and fives away every year.

I'd be tired of canning if we went that late in the year!

We didn't get the storms we thought we were supposed to get here tonight. Just a nice soaking rain that will do our garden well.

My tomatoes are doing ok. Not great, though. I only put in 3 plants. I do have a small patch of swiss chard, which came in handy when the spinach scare occurred last summer. Years ago, I would put in a dozen tomato plants and we would can. I don't have the yard for it now, though. Back then we would put in potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, corn, beans, tomatoes, swiss chard, zucchini, and cucumbers.

We Finau-ly had some rain today. If you stand outside on my deck, you can actually hear the garden growing!
No, really; it looks like a bumper crop of half-runners this year as well as squash, zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, and october beans. The corn is coming along, but at a slower pace than we would like. The rain should help it along. It also seems that we are going to have a good harvest of snow peas. For those of you who have never eaten fresh snow peas...mmm, you don't know what you are missing!
I had some fresh green onions and leaf lettuce tonight, wilted by some good hot bacon grease!

;D maters out the wazoo! The best we've had in the last 10 years.
What corn was edible, very full and sweet...however most didn't ripen out.
Here on the least coast the green beans didn't fare so well.
Green peppers stagnating as well (for years now).

Hey Pastor...what's for supper? Tonight we had fresh garden squash and zucchini, cooked with a vidalia onion; ears of silver queen corn; half-runner green beans cooked with some fatback in them and new potatoes; fresh cucumbers and tomatoes, and a banana pepper or two for good measure. Cooked chicken on the grill to go with it, and washed it down with a cold glass or two of sweet iced tea...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

C'mon down here to beautiful Bluefield, VA. We allow people to plant gardens on the church property (for a small fee). Only two people planted this year.

My tomatoes Finau-ly started ripening on the vine. I have had loads of fruit on my tomato plants all year, but they refused to ripen until this week.
I also am Finau-ly getting more than one pablano and chile pepper per month....growing em in spades now.
My garden spot is tiny, but I like it.

Just make that check for $10,000, payable to Pastor Randy c/o Church, Bluefield, VA and I'll personally make sure you are credited for it. After all, if we are going to call this part of your tithes, we need to make sure it covers the 10% of your annual income, right? Didn't you just get a job promotion of sorts?
