help?

short version:
I uninstalled Norton antivirus and installed Verizon's proprietary internet security suite.
Now, I can't get an internet connection (DSL) with the computer in normal mode (I can in safe mode though, so I assume it's not the line or the modem) .
It seems as if I probably have some unwanted norton files still lurking in the registry (and/or someplace else) that are creating a conflict. The diagnostic test helpfully tells me I have a software conflict but doesn't tell me what it might be.
I can't connect using IE, firefox or google chrome when I boot on normal mode.
Amit from Verizion tech service was very polite but pretty much impossible to understand and reading from a script that starts with such stupid stuff it would take an hour just to get past the stuff i've already tried.
whenever i try to connect i get "error 12029" which is nornally a firewall issue but i get it even with the firewall (both Verizon and and Windows disabled)
anyone have a plan?

www.ccleaner.com/Have you tried a registry cleaner like the link above. It seems like it is a simple conflict with Norton (I hate their shit)

I haven't. Have you used that one? I hate Norton too. Years ago it fucked up another of my computer when an auto update aborted in the middle and I never got that machine running right again.
It's my wife's computer that is fucked up and it only had Norton on it because when she signed up, she installed a Verizon Yahoo package (without asking my opinion) that included a free year of Norton. The browser had so much crap as add-ons etc., I'm sure there is all sorts of crap on the machine even after uninstalling.

Yes I have used that one in the past and it worked like a charm. Also just for shits and giggles you might want to turn off any signs of Norton running on the computer.
Start run type msconfig go to startup and disable any kind of norton
you could also go to start run type services.msc from there disable any kind of norton as well

Its definitely something running from the start-up because it runs in safe mode. I think Rats advice is good - even though the uninstall should have removed all traces...there is something loading up.

thanks rats. I've downloaded the ccleaner and installed it on a flashdrive and will try it tonight. Thanks for the other advice too. I tried an ipconfig/release ... /renew and that didn't work, and there is nothing identifiable to me as Norton or symantec in the startup shown in msconfig, but i never even heard of services.msc. What exactly is that?

another question:
does anyone know what "Verizon servicepoint" is and whether it is needed in startup?

How do I erase massive amounts of Porn from my work computer? Hypothetically speaking, of course.
