We are going to implement a 3-4 style D this year. Our current starting LB's are now, Holmes, Reed W., JT Thomas, and Wicks. Magro is hurt and did not practice yesterday and Goldbourne is ready and capable to fill in anytime.
Gwaltney did practice yesterday and his grades are fine, the main focus is getting him back to 100% as far as fitness. Ed Collington is doing very well and is working hard behind SS.
PW and JB will split time this year similar to what PW and AB did in 05. I think this is great for our O and fives PW a break every now and then. JB is way to talented to stay on the bench.
Our secondary is currently Lewis, Williams, Pugh, and QA. *Sorry GL, no T. Hale. He is just not good enough to beat anyone else out.
We are giving our D scheme a make over. With the 3-4 it allows us to get more LB speed on the field and also I was told we are going to implement wave style blitz's.
Sounds exciting so far guys, will keep you posted as I learn more. I can't wait for football season!

cool, thanks for the info pilot.
I'm interested in what RR's idea of splitting time is, whether it is 90-10 or 60-40.

I think putting PW on the bench for anything more than the occasional rest is a mistake.
If splitting time means using JB when we are up 21 points then fine.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is they are going to five JB playing time and experience, rather than make it a full split at QB. Much the same way that other schools get their QB's playing time when they know a QB will be departing soon.
Kinda like Tebow and Leak.

He will play more than mop-up duty but make no mistake PW is still the starter. PW will be primary and JB will be rotated in and out to five PW rest and also for JB to get game time and experience. I do not see it going 50/50 or probably even 60/40 on snaps, more like 70/30 probably.
Owen will play at TE but he will not "play TE" was what I was told. I am guessing it is to five him a head start blocking for the running game and possibly a option for a short dump off pass every blue moon.

i like giving JB every 4th or 5th series
i like Owen's blocking and hands being occasionally used at tight end
but when you say a 3-4 style............do you mean we are keeping the 3-3-5 and modifying it..........or do you mean running a 3-4

That's the same thing I asked.
I asked if we were going to occasionally run a 3-4 or morph this stack into the 3-4 more permanently and he said "RR would like to go to the 3-4"
I think we will still call everything the 3-3-5 offically and for any teams planning for us, but I think we will run more of a 3-4 this year. I bet RR will still call it the "stack" we will just use 4 LB's and 4 DB's.

i really never saw a huge difference in the 3-3-5 and a 3-4-4 anyhow
other than the extra safety may be smaller than the traditional outside linebacker
but the extra safety has been used primarily as a run defender / blitzer as far as i was concerned
my first reaction was to say:
1) if we switch will it help to attract better d-linemen? i dont see that much of a difference for the linemen so i think not
2) how long until the other board wants to scrap the 3-4?
3) the switch, in my mind, will not help our pass coverage or really help the pressure situation
4) i dont really know what i am talking about

I believe working Big Owen at TE is a ploy to force some of the younger guys to step it up. It will allow them to get more reps, and I also believe it is a plan to five JG the idea that if he keeps his head on straight, goes to class, and performs in practice he can be that second back.
Plus, think about this scenario: Sometimes SS will line-up in the slot, right? Imagine this scenario: SS in the slot, with Jarrett Brown at QB; PW and JG in the backfield, with Big Owen at TE. Now, toss in a speedy, big Wes Lyons on one side and a big, speedy Nate Sowers on the other...can you say mismatches all over the place?
If nothing else, it fives other defensive coordinators something to keep them up at night before playing us!

2) how long until the other board wants to scrap the 3-4? How true! I five them one season. Mostly you hear that we need to rush more and develop more blitz packages. RR is hiitting this head on this season. It will be interesting to see how many complain about the change after complaining about needing to change.

If any of you are still questioning my source I can provide a small bit of proof for you to ease your mind.
If you remember on VB1, last week I indicated Addae is back and coaching the DB's as a GA. If you go to MSN and watch the recap on the first spring practice you can see Addae roughly 2:40 into the video behind RR.
Just in case some of you still do not quite trust my info....

I know many of you have been with VB1 for a while and we have discussed many things regarding the team and have always been ahead of the other board.
My message is more toward the newer members of VB2. I just wanted to put out some sort of evidence that the information on this board is more than hear-say for the newer members of our community. The information presented on VB2 is straight from within the program and not from another guy who knows someone who heard something from someones brother who knows someone who talked to someone elses barber..... kind of information.
So new members if you want accurate information you get it from VB2. Remember it was this group that first learned back in the summer that JG could and most likely was coming back. It was this group that knew about P Williams and Benoit several days before they were released, and several days before RR actually made the statement about their release...
VB2 is the board for your Mountaineer news!!!

nope, but like i said, the one they dind't delete is pretty tame just basically being a smartass about how "other sites" broke it first, while they debate over there as if its only a pipedream, then of course ytou have 4-5 "I personally know <insert 4th string player here> and he says we're sticking with the 3-3-5"
